Description
For the generation of returned servicemen and women who arrived back in Australia following the Great War of 1914-1918, the world was full of possibilities. John Nelson Capuano returned to Bairnsdale in eastern Victoria and began a start-up in the fast-growing automobile sector. He was supported by his brother Earnest William Capuano, who re-joined an automotive parts firm in Melbourne.
Intital business failures in Bairnsdale led to The Big Garage, a name which was to become synonymous in Gippsland with motoring sales and service for the next 65 years – as well as with Australia’s Holden car brand for more than 50 of those years. The Capuano family (the name was changed to Capp in 1941) managed The Big Garage until 1988 when Nelson Capp’s son John Morton Capp, retired.
Author Andrew Kilsby has brought together the story of The Big Garage and its family founders in a fascinating slice of Victorian motoring history. The Big Garage brand continues today.
