The Largest Garage in Melbourne: Jas A Munro

The RHSV is delighted to welcome Ian Berg to deliver a talk based on his wonderful book, shortlisted for the Victorian Community History Awards in 2021.

Jas Munro, a Scottish immigrant, established a series of successful businesses in Melbourne during the early part of the twentieth century. He was captivated by the emerging horseless carriage and became an influential figure in the motor trade. And he operated his businesses at the Munro site, immediately next to the Queen Victoria Market. After more than a century, the Munro site was purchased and is being redeveloped by the City of Melbourne. The Munro archives survived and have enabled Ian Berg to now tell the story. Jas A Munro & Co: The Largest Garage in Melbourne is testament to the life of an enterprising man in early twentieth-century Australia. It is also about early Melbourne, the development of the motor business in Australia and the impact on business of a globally disruptive event – The Great War.

Ian will outline how, by chance, he came across the previously unseen archives and why he wrote the Munro story………

Jas A Munro & Co: The Largest Garage in Melbourne can be purchased from the RHSV bookshop here

This book has just received a glowing review in The Automobile, the UK bible for early motoring enthusiasts – click on the bookshop link above to read the review.
