Living With Fire: a brief history of fires in the Kinglake Ranges. By Kath Stewart & Deidre Hawkins

This book traces the history of bushfires in the Kinglake Ranges from pre-European settlement to the current day. It is replete with photos, stories, maps and hope.

Along with California, Victoria is the most bushfire prone area in the world. And, with climate change this is getting worse. The bushfire season starts earlier, lasts longer and includes more days with extreme weather conditions.

Victoria experiences many bushfires each year and, despite this frightening history, understanding bushfire risk is not a priority. Books like Living With Fire by Kinglake Historical Society play a crucial role in ensuring that our history is not forgotten, that the loss of lives and property was not totally in vain, and  hopefully, that we learn and remember and act on the lessons from these disasters that have occurred too regularly throughout our history.
