Description
This book is a record of the families who took up the challenge and the chance of a new life on the land when the Soldier Settlement Commission purchased the 10,000 hectare Tarrone Estate from the Boyd family to assist former World War II soldiers back into civilian life.
The historic property north of Port Fairy was carved into 50 blocks and allotted to ex-servicemen in four waves over the decade from 1948 to 1957.
Wayne and Marlene Johnson are among the seven families of the original 52 still farming on soldier settlement blocks today.
Mr Johnson’s parents John and Lorna were in the first batch to take up a farm.
Mrs Johnson said after a 50-year reunion was held in 1998, dwindling numbers had prompted their bid to document the settlement’s history.
